Why is Fire Safety Taken for Granted?
Every child is taught that when it comes to surviving a fire, seconds count. You may have only
seconds to get out of a burning building before it's too late. Fire safety equipment- smoke
detectors, sprinklers, and alarms buy precious time for people to get out and slow the advance of
the fire so firefighters can get there to save lives and protect valuable property.
Every homeowner is reminded to change their smoke detector batteries once a year. And
businesses are required to get annual inspections to ensure their systems are working properly.
Each of us goes about our daily lives assuming that the businesses we frequent, the hotels we
sleep in and the places we work in every day are safe. We expect that fire safety systems are in
place, inspections occur, and fire departments are verifying compliance.
Unfortunately the process isn't working as well as it should. In a recent survey of fire marshals, one
of one state's largest counties could only confirm a 10% inspection conformance rate. In other
words, their businesses' fire safety systems may have not been recently inspected to ensure
they are working. Fire marshal's lack effective means to track inspection data to ensure every
business is being inspected in a timely fashion.
"When fire safety systems are in place, and properly maintained, they work..."
